The very basic idea behind hatha yoga origin was the purification of the body and its elements before indulging in meditation (mental) practice. This idea builds a foundation for the physical postures, we know today as hatha yoga asanas.

The 15 asanas of Hatha yoga are; Swastikasana, Gomukhasana, Veerasana, Kurmasana, Kukkutasana, Uttanakoormasana, Dhanurasana, Matsyendrasana, Paschimottanasana, Mayurasana, Shavasana, Siddhasana, Padmasana, Simhasana, and Bhadrasana. Out of these 15, 11 are sitting postures which denotes hatha yoga asanas more emphsize on meditation and relaxation purpose.


Among different sitting asanas of hatha yoga, Kukkutasana is one of the balancing poses where one has to lift up the body onto the palms. Its practice is aim to awaken the kundalini to the upper chakras.


Unlike other hatha yoga asanas which are performed with some conscious efforts, Shavasana is the easiest of all. It helps in building body and mental awareness -hence a good technique to practice Pratyahara.


Among the Yogasanas, there are 84 basic asanas through which one can elevate his consciousness. When we say 84 asanas, do not think of them as just 84 postures. These are 84 systems, 84 ways of attaining. Out of this, if you have mastery over even a single yogasana, everything that is worth knowing in the existence can be known.


Questioner: In asanas such as ardhasiddhasana, vrikshasana, and yogamudra, the heel should touch the perineum. What if this is anatomically not possible or if it slips? Sadhguru: If you partially sit on the heel, it will always touch this three-fourth of an inch space that the perineum is. Whether the heel slips or not depends on how comfortably it goes to the perineum. Once you become more flexible, it will stay there. When you do janurshirsasana for example, do not move the heel away for your convenience. The important thing that you want to create in these asanas is full pressure on the muladhara.


Yoga is becoming popular and the UN has recently declared June 12th as the International Yoga Day. The scientific community is slowly beginning to recognize the depth and dimension of the process. The flip-side though is the rampant spread of the commercialized and distorted kind of yoga. And it will not be long before, the harmful effects of this distortion will destroy the trust people repose in the process. So it is important that we sustain the classical forms of yoga and retain it as it was. If yoga is taught in the right atmosphere with a certain sense of humility and inclusiveness, it is a really fantastic process for molding the human system into a powerful possibility to perceive existence.
